Hillary breakfast read in 5 minutes
“21-year-old Hillary
Clinton spoke about coming of age at her college graduation”
… Hillary’s
remarks—her attempt to make sense of the questions, doubts, and
hopes young Americans faced—struck a chord. And today, her speech,
here in full, is just as relevant and thought-provoking as it was in
1969."
“If the experiment in
human living doesn't work in this country, in this age, it's not
going to work anywhere.”
"Hillary Rodham arrived
at Wellesley College in the fall of 1965 as a Young Republican. By
the time she graduated four years later, she—and the country—had
undergone a profound change.
Hillary was chosen by her
classmates to be the first-ever student speaker at Wellesley’s 1969
commencement ceremony. And she used the opportunity to deliver a
fiery speech about coming of age in the era of Vietnam and the
struggle for civil and women’s rights.
Her remarks followed those
of Senator Edward Brooke, the official commencement speaker. “At
the time, [Brooke’s] speech sounded like a defense of President
Nixon’s policies, notable more for what it didn’t say than what
it did,” Hillary remembers. “I listened in vain for an
acknowledgment of the legitimate grievances and painful questions so
many young Americans had about our country’s direction. I waited
for some mention of Vietnam or civil rights or of Dr. King or Senator
Kennedy, two of our generation’s fallen heroes. The senator seemed
out of touch with his audience: 400 smart, aware, questioning young
women. His words were aimed at a different Wellesley, one that
predated the upheavals of the 1960s.” …
