A Reporter’s Guide To Protest

By Anthony Breznican

The Women’s March takes place on Saturday, rallying people from around the country in a show of resistance to the reckless and destructive policies of the incoming president.

When I started out as a general news reporter, I frequently covered protests and rallies in Southern California for the Associated Press. These days, I have begun attending demonstrations as a concerned citizen rather than a reporter. But I thought it might be useful to share some insight from the perspective of a person who used to cover these events for the media.

Hopefully, it will help keep people safe while also providing tips to amplify their message.

For those who are attending a protest for the first time, this should provide some context about what to expect...

^^^ "PROTEST FOR RIGHT - Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr."

(Transcript:  "All we say to America is, "Be true to what you said on paper." If I lived in China or even Russia, or any totalitarian country, maybe I could understand some of these illegal injunctions. Maybe I could understand the denial of certain basic First Amendment privileges, because they hadn't committed themselves to that over there. But somewhere I read of the freedom of assembly. Somewhere I read of the freedom of speech. Somewhere I read of the freedom of press. Somewhere I read that the greatness of America is the right to protest for right." - Dr, Martin Luther King, Jr., delivered 3 April 1968, Mason Temple (Church of God in Christ Headquarters), Memphis, Tennessee)
