Personal Commentary ~
Hashtag "Why I Don't Tell" Kicked Off on Twitter on the 21st.
Survivors filled the #WhyIDidntReport thread with their truths.
Family, friends and supporters chimed in, too.
And, it was all happening just around the time GOP Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell was trekking to the Floor of the United States Senate to deny the truths of the women who are coming forward to shine the light on the sexually abusive acts they say were committed by his party’s nominee for a position on the Supreme Court -- Judge Brett Kavanaugh.
With so much chaos in America this week, I’d just wanted to take a moment or two today to highlight 10 of Tweets.
We can't forget -- as the GOP continues to attack and to re-traumatize victims for not coming forward when "they" thought they should have come forward -- #WhyIDidntReport
No names. Just 10 tweets. In their own words.
(Beware the hateful trolls though. As soon as they see such an event taking place they jump on the hashtag and spread their hate. Just skip by them.)
One
Why didn't I tell?
Because I was ashamed
Because I thought it was my fault...
Because nobody would believe me.
Because when I told, it didn't change anything.
Because I wasn't worthy.
Because I was afraid.
Because these things don't happen to 'good girls'.
Two
#WhyIDidntReport When I was 17, during the summer after I graduated High School, I was supposed to be on a date and ended up the guy took me to a house and 5 guys raped me. I am 72 years old now and this is the first time I have ever spoken up. I have been too ashamed to report
THREE
Almost eighteen years later and I’m still not ready to tell my own story of rape. But it’s important to me to have a voice: I stand in solidarity with those who have found the courage to come forward. I’m more terrified to write this than anything I’ve ever done. #whyididntreport
FOUR
Because he was my boss who was married and has kids.
- I went out drinking and didn't think anyone would take it seriously.
- I thought I'd lose my job and not be able to afford to live.
I was just a teen.
FIVE
#WhyIDidntReport because I was dating him and working with him and I didn’t want people to think I was weak. Because I knew half of our friends & coworkers would question me and maybe not believe me. Because I never thought a man I trusted and cared so much about would hurt me
SIX
#WhyIDidntReport The teacher I trusted enough to tell told me not to say anything because he was an athlete and where I come from, athletes are untouchable. She said she knew, because she had reported when it happened to her. They told her everything she did wrong.
SEVEN
Because he was my superior in the military. #WhyIDidntReport
EIGHT
At 12yrs old, I was embarrassed and ashamed and didn't want anyone to know. I thought it was my fault. #WhyIDidntReport
NINE
Because he was my best friend. The one friend I did tell didn’t believe me because “he’s too nice a guy to do that”. #WhyIDidntReport
TEN
I was nine years old when i was raped. My mother told me not to tell anyone ever. This is the first time i have said i was raped. Im 36 now. #WhyIDidntReport

It’s a simple but powerful idea: We are stronger together."
