#StrongerTogether ! "Hillary presents daughter Chelsea Clinton with Eleanor Roosevelt Val-Kill Medal in Hyde Park" + a Personal πŸ“Ž Note on Eleanor...

Focused Agenda Block

~ Personal πŸ“ŽNote:

This is a heartwarming story -- Hillary Clinton, a former Val-Kill Medal recipient -- presenting her daughter with the Eleanor Roosevelt Val-Kill Medal.

But, it is more than that, though, if we just pause for a minute and think about it, also an important and timely reminder to remember Eleanor Roosevelt whose crowing achievement was her leadership in the creation of a Universal Declaration of Human Rights, a time to remember who we once were so we might decide if that is who we still are -- are not -- in 2020.

Preamble

Whereas recognition of the inherent dignity and of the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world,

Whereas disregard and contempt for human rights have resulted in barbarous acts which have outraged the conscience of mankind, and the advent of a world in which human beings shall enjoy freedom of speech and belief and freedom from fear and want has been proclaimed as the highest aspiration of the common people,

Whereas it is essential, if man is not to be compelled to have recourse, as a last resort, to rebellion against tyranny and oppression, that human rights should be protected by the rule of law,

Whereas it is essential to promote the development of friendly relations between nations,

Whereas the peoples of the United Nations have in the Charter reaffirmed their faith in fundamental human rights, in the dignity and worth of the human person and in the equal rights of men and women and have determined to promote social progress and better standards of life in larger freedom,

Whereas Member States have pledged themselves to achieve, in co-operation with the United Nations, the promotion of universal respect for and observance of human rights and fundamental freedoms,

Whereas a common understanding of these rights and freedoms is of the greatest importance for the full realization of this pledge,

Now, Therefore THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY proclaims THIS UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS as a common standard of achievement for all peoples and all nations,

to the end that every individual and every organ of society, keeping this Declaration constantly in mind, shall strive by teaching and education to promote respect for these rights and freedoms

and by progressive measures, national and international, to secure their universal and effective recognition and observance, both among the peoples of Member States themselves and among the peoples of territories under their jurisdiction. ...

Aside from bringing American values and principles to the global table, Eleanor was also a woman who partnered with her husband, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, 32nd president of the United States from 1933 until his death in 1945, to govern a nation at another of one of the most critical times in our history.

"Hillary Clinton presents daughter Chelsea Clinton with Eleanor Roosevelt Val-Kill Medal in Hyde Park

Speaking at Val-Kill, the home of a fellow former first lady known for recognizing injustices against defenseless populations and roadblocks to advancements for women, Hillary Clinton on Sunday made a point of noting that the attacks against the Kurds by the Turkish army were an example of how Eleanor Roosevelt should serve as an example for human rights advocates.

The former secretary of state and U.S. senator from New York made her remarks at the estate where Roosevelt lived.

Clinton was there to present the Eleanor Roosevelt Val-Kill Medal to her daughter, Chelsea Clinton.

She was one of five medal recipients.

The conflict on the Syrian-Turkish border was brought up during the ceremonies.

Hillary Clinton said fundamental values that Roosevelt stood for are still being challenged 57 years after her death.

“I think we have an obligation to stand up for those who are under assault here at home and around the world,” she said.

“The horrific attack that is going on against the Kurds right now led to the brutal murder of a woman leader of the Syrian defense forces that the Kurds have been running.”

Hevrin Khalaf, who has been identified as secretary-general of the Future Syria Party, was dragged out of a vehicle by Turkish mercenaries and executed with other passengers on Saturday, according to media reports.

“In the forefront of leadership of the Kurds are women,” Clinton said.  “Women military units, women leaders, and what the Turks have done is to empower Arab militias ... (to engage) in a terrible abuse of human rights that could very well lead to the loss of tens of thousands of lives and injuries that would be very much close to ethnic cleansing.”
(Emphasis is mine.)

Clinton, a former Val-Kill Medal recipient, served as one of the medal presenters. Chelsea Clinton was honored as a health educator and women’s rights advocate. Her work has emphasized providing youngsters with access to health programs and providing opportunities for female entrepreneurs.

Chelsea Clinton said she was also dismayed at the events in Syria, but noted that Roosevelt recognized that change comes from being rooted in the optimism of young people.

“She ... believed that if children had understood in what human rights are and why they’re important and we each only have them ultimately if we all have them, that we have to ... (cultivate an interest) in human rights in kids,” she said, “which is why she wrote children’s books. That’s also why I write children’s books.”

(You can read about one of Eleanor's children's books, “When You Grow Up to Vote: How Our Government Works for You,” here

" ... “There is just no space to be anything but optimistic even in this moment of horror and disappointment in our leaders because we’ve had leaders like Eleanor Roosevelt before and we will again,” she said.

During the presidency of her husband, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Eleanor Roosevelt was considered critical in bringing unfiltered information to the White House because she visited poverty-stricken and underserved areas of the nation.

After her husband's death in 1945, she became chairwoman of the United Nations Human Rights Committee's effort to have every man, woman and child provided with equal justice, equal opportunity and equal dignity without discrimination through the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Said Hillary Clinton, “As of today, it is the single most widely distributed piece of literature in world history. More people have read it, more people have downloaded it ... so it’s words are even more important given the context of what’s happening in our world today.” ... "
